Temperment Of The Coton de Tulear

flag

Cotons are described as very friendly, sociable dogs with engaging personalities. They are gentle and get long well with children, other dogs and animals.

While Cotons are very lively and alert, they are quite stable and slow to anger. Although, as a breed, Cotons are not known to bark a lot, they often will act as little alarm clocks and watch dogs for their families.

The Coton is a companion dog, extremely devoted to its family. They do not like to be separated from the key person/s in their lives. They are eager to please, and to pay loving attention to their human family members.

Cotons are highly intelligent and quick to learn. They are often said to "study" their human family members carefully. Although intensely loyal and so very eager to learn, Cotons are sometimes described as "occasionally having a mind of their own". They train especially well in an atmosphere of play, variety, and positivity.

Cotons are known for their playful demeanor and are often referred to as "little clowns." Two of the breed's most acclaimed and delightful trademarks include "smiling," and walking on their hind legs.

As long as the Coton is a house dog, it can adapt to and enjoy family outings in a variety of environments, from deserts to snow country. Cotons can make excellent apartment dogs, with high enough energy in a sufficiently small bundle to allow them to get a lot of exercise while playing indoors.

Although house dogs,Cotons also love to swim and play with the family in wide open spaces. Many have even been known to enjoy accompanying their "masters" on horseback.

Their energy and ease of learning make the Cotons excellent candidates for the dog sport of agility. As long as it is included in the family's activities, however, the Coton will happily adapt to a variety of situations. As a full-fledged family member, the Coton retains a puppy-like joy throughout its long life.
