Human Food Favorites That Are Toxic To Dogs
Unfortunately, many of the foods that we humans relish are toxic for our 4-legged best
friends. In fact, even foods deemed as nutritious for us can be harmful, or sometimes fatal when consumed by
dogs.
Here are descriptions of 6 of the most sickening foods that can harm your Bichon (or any breed)
dog:
CHOCOLATE:
Chocolate contains "theobromine" which acts as a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic.
Semi-sweet chocolate and dark chocolate have the most poisonous effects on dogs. The signs of poisoning
include excessive urination, excessive thirst, vomiting, and diarrhea. Also, the dog's heart rate will increase,
and may become irregular. Although the signs of sickness may not be seen for several hours, chocolate ingestion is
often fatal within 24 hours.
ONIONS and GARLIC:
While onions are much more dangerous than garlic, they both contain "thiosulphate," which is
highly toxic for dogs. thiosulphate causes "haemolytic anemia," a condition in which the pet's red blood cells
burst. The signs include vomiting, diarrhea, reddish urine, and breathlessness. These poisoning effects occur
a few days after the dog has eaten onion (or garlic). It is important to note that all forms of onion and garlic
are a problem, including dehydrated, raw, and cooked forms. Even table scraps, pizza, Chinese dishes, and
commercial baby foods containing bits of onion or garlic can have highly toxic effects.
MACADEMIA NUTS:
Both raw and roasted forms, as well as macadamia butter, are known to have toxic effects on dogs.
The signs involve tremors of the skeletal muscles, and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters. Frequently there
is also swelling in the legs and pain when the legs are moved.
GRAPES and RAISINS:
The exact toxic component in grapes and raisins has not yet been identified. To further
confuse the issue, some dogs have been known to eat very small amounts without observable negative effects.
However, both grapes and raisins, even in small amounts, have proven fatal to dogs. Signs of poisoning from grapes
or raisins include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and lethargy. When death occurs, is due to kidney
failure.
AVOCADO:
Avocado contains the toxin, "persin." It can cause damage to vital organs including the heart and
lungs, as well as other tissues. Because they are high in fat, avocados can trigger stomach upset, vomiting, or
even pancreatitis. The seed pit is also toxic. These can become lodged in the intestinal tract if swallowed,
requiring surgery to be removed. Guacamole, because it contains avocado is also very toxic for our 4-legged
friends!
ALCOHOL:
Alcohol ingestion can cause disorientation, vomiting, sickness, and urination problems. Dogs can
become injured under the influence of alcohol. Ultimately, alcohol poisoning can cause coma and death. A dog's
small body is much less able to handle the toxic effects of alcohol than an adult person. Since some dogs may
be attracted to the sweetness of an alcoholic drink, make sure to keep these beverages out of their
reach.
Hopefully raising your awareness about 6 of the most sickening, and potentially deadly foods will
help you be a more vigilant "doggie" parent when it comes to sharing what you eat with them.
