Temperment Of The Lowchen

The Lowchen, also called, "Little Lion" dogs make excellent house and companion dogs.

Lively, active, and playful, these robust characters enjoy engaging in play with children. Being small, and having a gentle, sensitive disposition, however, play sessions with Lowchen are best suited for older, more responsible children.

Even adult Lowchen are known for their clownish almost puppy-like behavior. They have been described as "big dogs in small dogs' bodies." With this attitude, the Lowchen are spunky and high-spirited enough to love playing with their human family members for the duration of their lives. This lively, outgoing, inquisitive aspect of their nature may not be a good match for some potential owners

Lowchen have a bright, affectionate disposition. They are very people-oriented and need a great deal of attention and interaction. They do not like to be left alone for long periods. Because of their need for companionship, they are not suitable for families that are away from home most of the day.

A Lowchen can be quite active indoors and can get a lot of exercise playing in the house. However, they do best when they are able to take long walks on a regular basis.

The Lowchen score high marks for their "watch dog" traits. They can bark intensely to warn approaching strangers and to alert family members. They are known for selecting a spot of high visibility, such as the back of a chair or sofa, from which they can peer out a window to announce visitors.

Intelligent and quick to learn, the Lowchen are attentive and responsive to non forceful, positive training methods. They are eager to learn and present little difficulty in training as long as the way of teaching is gentle, reward-based, and consistent.

Lowchen are usually friendly to other dogs and non-canine pets. Occasionally an unaltered male might challenge another household dog for leadership. It is not unusual for the Lowchen to be the smallest dog in the house and yet still maintain status as the "top dog" in the house.

A Lowchen can provide many years of loyal, loving, companionship.
