Description of The Lowchen Dog

The Lowchen, also known as the "Little Lion Dog"is a member of the Bichon family. Appropriately named the "show cut" for these lively, affectionate, cheerful, little dogs is called a "lion trim."
Untrimmed, the Lowchen coat is long and wavy, but not curly. The coat is rather dense, and some whatsilky or soft as opposed to coarse or wiry.
The Lowchen have no undercoat. This can make brushing and combing them a little easier than what is needed for long-haired breeds with double-coats. Nevertheless, the Lowchen still require regular grooming to avoid tangles and matting of their long coat.
A non-shedding breed, the Lowchen is an excellent choice for folks who suffer from allergies.
The fully grown Lowchen, stand about 12" to 14" at the withers (or highest points of the shoulders). The body is short and well proportioned with a medium length tail. It has pendant, feathered ears. Their dark, round eyes are accentuated by black or brown eye-rims.
Lowchen vary in color. These include black, white, chocolate and apricot, chocolate and cream, gold, sable, black and tan, and a variety of speckled and party-colors.
When sporting a "lion trim," the "show cut" of choice for the Lowchen, they are highly recognizable. Trimmed to mimic the look of the "king of the beasts," the coat is clipped very short (about 1/8 inch in length) from the last rib back to and including the hindquarters. This leaves a ruff or mane of long hair on the front of the body which extends back just far enough to cover the last rib. The legs are also clipped short, but with cuffs of long hair left on the lower legs. The feet are clipped just to the point where the dew claws were removed. The tail is clipped from the base to about one-half way to the tip, leaving a plume at the end of the tail. The untrimmed areas are left natural without shaping, shortening, or smoothing.
In 1999, the Lowchen were the 143rd breed recognized by AKC. They are a member of the "Non-Sporting Breed" group.
A little known fact, "Freeway", the dog in the TV series "Hart To Hart", was an unclipped Lowchen. Lowchen make excellent companions, and love to be "center stage".
